Inklet

The Inklet software allows you to define a region on your screen. Moving the Pogo Sketch over the trackpad moves the cursor over that region, and applying pressure allows you to paint or draw. The smaller you make the region, the less the cursor moves on the screen for the same motion on the trackpad. This allows you to get very fine control. Has your inner artist been on a hunger strike, protesting to be let out? Or is he or she more of the red-paint-on-fur-coat activist type that’s angry about the high cost of Wacom tablets? Regardless, Ten One Design’s new Inklet app may put an end to your suffering, as it can turn an ordinary MacBook trackpad into a pen tablet.

Inklet displays a canvas in most popular drawing and image apps, like Photoshop, Brushes, SketchBook Pro, and Illustrator, on which your trackpad movements become pen and brush strokes. Inklet’s tools stay out of your way, however, awaiting activation by keyboard shortcut or a menubar item.

You can customize the size and position of Inklet’s drawing space on the actual canvas you are working in, and you can get pressure-sensitive strokes if you use Ten One Design’s Pogo Sketch tool while drawing. Inklet can even work with Mac OS X’s built-in handwriting recognition tools, and a couple of demo videos at the company’s site show the feature in action.

Ten One Design says Inklet should work with more apps than those mentioned above, so it might let you draw in other popular apps like Acorn and Pixelmator. A recent MacBook with a multi-touch trackpad running Mac OS X 10.6 Snow Leopard is required, and a demo is available. A license costs $25.

  • Inklet is designed to make your trackpad act like a pen tablet. If you're having trouble doing that, we can probably help.
  • Check out the common Q&A at the bottom of the page, or hit the links below for help configuring Inklet:

I'm drawing, but nothing is showing up!

Make sure you have a drawing program open under Inklet. Compatible programs are listed a few questions down. Also, make sure you have a pen tool selected in your program, and you're not trying to draw with white on a white background. That never works.

How can I draw without a Pogo Sketch?

Inkle Loom

Yes, if you're using Inklet 1.1 or later, just change the drawing tool to 'finger' in the Inklet drawing preferences. It's not as easy, but it's possible.

Does Inklet come with a Pogo Sketch?

The Pogo Sketch is sold separately, but there is a bundle available (Inklet + Pogo Sketch) for a discounted price.

Does Inklet work with the Magic Trackpad?

Yes. If an internal trackpad is not available, Inklet will automatically detect and use a connected Magic Trackpad. Inklet works best on internal trackpads, as pressure sensitivity is limited on the Magic Trackpad.

It looks like 'Start inking with pressure' isn't working?

Make sure you're running the latest version of Inklet. If so, check that the drawing tool is set correctly in Preferences/Drawing: to 'Pogo Sketch' or to 'finger,' depending on what you're using to draw. Please note that Photoshop CS3 does not recognize Inklet as a tablet and is unable to respond to the pressure information. You will still be able to draw but will not have pressure sensitivity with CS3.

Does Inklet do all that Autograph does, or will I need to purchase both?

If you're looking to sign a document, Autograph is definitely the way to go. Inklet is really great for drawing or sketching, but it's not designed specifically for signing things like Autograph is.
There is one exception, however. If you're signing a PDF document, it's pretty easy to open it in Skim (a free PDF editor), and draw right on the document with Inklet. For example, you could mark up the document with changes, sign it, then save it.

Help! A yellow sheet keeps appearing, and I can't draw.

Look for the pen icon in your top toolbar. This is the handwriting recognition program built into Mac OSX.
Click on the pen icon, and deselect 'Write Anywhere.' This will stop the operating system from intercepting the inklet events. Inklet should now act normally and draw into any compatible program.
